The 964 is an icon, combining the best of both worlds. When it was introduced in 1989, the iconic lines of the primal 911 remained largely intact, but meanwhile 85% of the car was new and received ABS and power steering.
The Porsche Mezger engine was boosted to 3.6 litres that still made the true air-cooled boxer engine sound. This one was good for 250bhp.
The suspension was also significantly modernised, with coil springs at the rear instead of torsion bars and MacPherson suspension at the front.
In late 1989, some Porsche engineers decided to build a successor to the Porsche 944 Cup. The 964 was stripped bare, fitted with a welded Matter roll cage, Sperdifferential, the power steering was removed and the engine was blueprinted and the engine management was tweaked a bit. The suspension was fitted with stiffer springs and dampers and the braking system was enlarged.
The 964 Cup was a success, starting in 1990 and running until 1994 after which the 993 Cup took over.
Since a true successor to the 73'er Carrera RS had never been built, a street-legal version of the 964 Cup was made, the Carrera RS that saw the light of day in 1992. Basically a Cup car without a roll cage and with a (thin) carpet inside. Stiff, no steering pump and a single-mass flywheel that made the transmission rattle like crazy. About 1900 of them were produced in the street version.
Since there were still Porsche customers who wanted to drive a 964 RS in club races and or trackdays, Porsche decided to build a small series of 290 NGT examples. The NGT hardly differs from the Cup version and is therefore actually a Cup with license plate.
The one we are offering is extra special because of the "sonderwunschfabe" Blutengelb, which, as far as we have been able to find out, was only delivered 6 times on the 964 RS.
In addition, this is a car with less than 67,000 km (that's over 2,000 km per year....). In 1997, at 27,860 km, the counter unit was replaced at the Porsche dealer due to a defect. It is all neatly documented in the original service booklet which was only stamped by the official Porsche dealer. What the story does not tell is whether a new counter was installed with a "0" reading or whether the counter was set to the old reading. Seeing the history, it seems very likely that the new counter was set to the old reading and so the current odometer reading of 66,984 km is correct.
The 964 NGT is fully matching and, as far as the current owner knows, is still completely in its first paint. Porsche Eindhoven also describes the car as a picture, with a bone-dry engine that still gives full power and has lost none of its sharp steering character.
In Germany, the car had 3 owners after which the current owner brought the car to the Netherlands in 2003. Within the family, the car was transferred once in 2008.
The current owner only used the car sporadically, but had it serviced every few years by the specialists at Porsche Centrum Eindhoven.
Our opinion
A car that rarely comes on the market, especially in this original, untouched and well-documented condition. At the time of this writing, only 2 original NGTs are offered in Europe.
If you are in the market for one of the most spartan Porsches ever made, with a registration number, make your move!
Do not hide it in a shed under a canvas, but put it through its paces, preferably on a terrain where it belongs (precisely "the racetrack"). With care, of course, because you don't want to damage this pure car, but nothing is as nice as wringing out this icon. As far as we are concerned, a real Collectable!

As already indicated, the counter unit was replaced in 1997 at 27,860 km. Given the build-up of the odometer reading, it is plausible that the new counter was set to the original reading at the time and the current odometer reading of 66,984 is therefore correct.

About the seller
We are auctioning this 964 Carrera on behalf of an enthusiast who has had the car in their family since 2003. They fell for the colour, version and fantastic condition of the car at the time. To keep the car in this condition, it has only been driven sporadically. As the owner expects very little future use, the car may leave the collection.
