The Porsche 924 has always suffered somewhat from the ‘it's not a 911’ syndrome. That these Porsches have great handling, good performance and are just a lot of Porsche for the money is often forgotten for a while.
Meanwhile, the Porsche 924 is a sought-after classic among Porsche enthusiasts. The 924 emerged from a Volkswagen-Audi collaboration with the aim of offering an attractively priced sports car for a wide buying public.
The Porsche 924 was originally a design brief by Porsche for VW/Audi that was later sold back to Porsche. The 924 was a success and saved Porsche after the company ran into trouble. Between 1976 and 1985, about 125,000 924s and 14,000, 924 Turbos (officially called Porsche 931) were sold.
In 1979, Porsche presented the future 944 as a styling model. The following year, the company entered the 924 at Le Mans and had to homologate a race car to comply with the Group 4 racing regulations.
The 924 offered here is a special specimen and has been completely taken care of by Porsche (Classic) specialist Lammertink and prepared as a rally car. No expense (over 54000,- euro) was spared to turn it into a reliable and well-steering rally car. The hard and unrestored bodywork came from Italy in 2017 and was / is in very good condition. All original booklets are present.
The atmospheric 2.0 engine was tuned and fitted with two dual carburettors (with dual fuel pump), increasing power to a reliable 150hp measured on the chassis dynamometer. Brakes and chassis were partly borrowed from the Porsche 944 and are thereby calculated for the power and heavier rally work! To finish it off, Bilstein shock absorbers, beautiful Fuchs rims were fitted and the rear axle is height-adjustable. Furthermore, the car has electric power steering. In the interior, we find a trip master, parking heater, roll cage, sports seats with four-point belts. In addition, an electronic ignition is fitted, the alternator has extra capacity, spotlights, wide beams and a larger petrol tank from the Porsche 924 turbo with a capacity of 80 litres. The car is ready for use and extremely suitable for a winter trial, for example. Take a look at the photos for a small impression.
Our opinion
If you want to drive classic rallies comfortably, this 924 Rally is worth considering. Something different from yet another classic 911, 356, Giulia or Escort and at least on the same level in terms of performance, handling and usability. From personal experience, we know that a 924 has excellent handling and is very reliable. In addition, maintenance is very affordable and relatively easy.
