One of the first Porsche 928s, originally delivered in the Netherlands and, according to the owner, delivered new to him. Also equipped with a manual gearbox and a low NAP odometer reading. With the 928, in production from the 1978 model year, the focus was on low weight. The doors, both front wings and bonnet were made of aluminium. The bumpers were plastic and integrated into the bodywork, The aluminium profiles behind the bumper could withstand a collision up to 8 km/h maximum.
The 928 had distinctive round, electrically operated folding headlights. All 928 models were powered by a water-cooled V8 engine with a 90° block angle. In this first series, the engine had a capacity of 4.5 litres to later grow to a whopping 5.4 litres. Following the transaxle principle, the gearbox sat at the rear axle which was a revolutionary development with double wishbones (so-called Weissachas, Winkel einstellende, selbststabilisierende Ausgleichs-Charakteristik) that behaved as a kind of passive rear-wheel steering.
In this first base version, the 928 has 240 hp under the bonnet. Modest by today's standards, but at the time well above what Porsche had to offer (apart from the 911 Turbo). Built entirely of aluminium-silicon alloy with 2 overhead camshafts, an engine by the book!
The 1978 928 we are offering was, by his own admission, bought new by the current and first owner. He drove it sporadically and had the car kept running by various garages. Unfortunately, little is known about it and the current garage owner has been instructed to sell the car. The car drives, steers and shifts, but we do recommend maintenance after purchase. Furthermore, the owner once thought of fitting modern bumpers on it from a later model. It doesn't look out of place, but of course takes away some of the originality. Fortunately, original bumpers can still be found, so the purist can easily restore the car to its original condition. Besides, the car was originally delivered in Minervablau and the interior was in black/white velour. The current seats seem to be from a more modern type. Also, the car has quite a few traces of use and storage and a slight oil leakage is visible.
Our opinion
As already reported, a car with quite a story. Obvious pros are the original Dutch delivery and the (according to the owner) first owner (RDW indicates 1 owner but an ascription in 1994) and correct NAP according to the RDW.
Getting the car into original condition does require serious investment, so the perfect opportunity for someone who wants to take up this project.
About the seller
Unfortunately, the owner is no longer able to drive the car and is also no longer approachable. His garage owner is now offering the car. As the owner can no longer be communicated with, it is difficult to find out the full story of the car.
Equipment
Unfortunately, the original equipment cannot be traced
Modifications
This 928 has been modified on several fronts. A brief list of the parts we were able to note:
- Black repaint (original Minerva blue)
- Interior with modern black leather sports seats instead of black and white velour
- Bumpers adapted to 1987 model year
Notes
This Porsche is in fair condition. Given its long minimal use and incomplete service history, we recommend servicing prior to entry into service.
Recent maintenance history
This Porsche has been serviced by several garages. MOT and necessary work have always been carried out to keep the car running. The last known invoice (Porsche specialist PSNH from Alkmaar) of serious maintenance is from 2012. At that time, 2 tyres were replaced, the brake discs and blocks replaced and the car was fitted with a new timing belt.
