Always wanted a Porsche Carrera GT, but no 1.5 million in the bank? Then this is your chance.
In 1981, Porsche built a homologation special, limited to 406 units, based on the Porsche 924 and christened it the Carrera GT.
The Porsche 924 was originally a design brief by Porsche for VW/Audi and was later sold back to Porsche. The 924 was a success and brought in much-needed cash after the company got into trouble due to the oil crisis in the 1970s. Between 1976 and 1985, around 125,000 924s and 14,000 924 Turbos (officially called Porsche 931) were sold.
In 1979, Porsche presented the future 944 as a styling model. The following year, the company entered the 924 at Le Mans and had to homologate a race car to comply with the Group 4 racing regulations. The homologated version was called the 924 Carrera GT and was a further developed 924 Turbo with wider polyurethane front and rear wings.
Porsche made in 1981, 331 Carrera GTs of the 924 (type 937), The right-hand drive as type 938 (75 units). So a total of 406 units to meet the homologation requirements of at least 400 units. The 924 GT produces 210 hp from a redeveloped 924 Turbo engine with intercooler, weighs 1,180 kilos, has a 49/51 weight distribution, handles well, is reliable, has a racing pedigree and is affordable in terms of maintenance.
A step up from the GT is the GTS, of which 59 were made. In addition, 19 full-race 924 Carrera GTRs were produced.
Apart from the (forged) lighter pistons, most of the engine's internal components are the same as those of the Porsche 924 Turbo, which itself shares most of its parts with the 924. The base engine is always the same simple cast-iron 2-litre from VW/Audi. The 937 also used 911 parts that were not used for the 924 or 931, such as a clutch plate from the 911, the reinforced gearbox with 911 syncromesh rings and the Fuchs wheels that came from the 911/930. The brakes and front dampers are shared with the later 944.
The 924 Carrera GT was available in red, silver or black, the GTS (with 245hp) was only available in red and the race cars were white. The (standard) cast-iron engine generated 210 hp at 6,000 rpm at a relatively low compression of 8.0:1. The unique parts are mainly Kolbenschmidt's lighter forged pistons, a slightly larger version of the 931 KKK turbocharger with a filling pressure of 0.75 bar and the intercooler attached on top of the block. Getrag produced the reinforced "dogleg" gearbox. The 924 Carrera GT has a slightly stiffer version of the Turbo Series II suspension and was fitted with 7x15 Fuchs rims as standard. 16-inch (7 and 8J) was optional. The 924 Carrera GT had plastic vents and special guides, which directed cool air from the front bumper to the brake discs.
The 924 Carrera GT was the second most expensive Porsche in 1981; only the 930 Turbo cost more!
The 924 Carrera GT we offered was delivered to Germany in February 1981 and later left for Belgium. After the Belgian owner sold the car to a Dutch Porsche specialist, the current owner bought the car in 2010 and put the car on NL registration plates immediately after purchase at the end of 2010. He used the car mainly for touring and unfortunately broke down the engine in January 2013 due to detonation. A common problem with Carrera GTs. In addition, a previous engine repair had not been carried out very carefully. After a long search, the owner managed to secure a new set of oversize pistons, the engine was reassembled and fitted with an electronic ignition. Due to various circumstances, the car was not ready until the beginning of this year, was MOT approved and the first few kilometres have already been done. Partly due to the long idle time, the CGT has low mileage, which, given the condition of the interior and exterior (only the roof and bonnet, as far as measurable, have ever been painted) and the attached history, seems to be correct.
Our opinion
One of the most exclusive Porsches if you look at production numbers. The CGT really is a completely different car compared to its other 924 brethren. Sometimes there are 2 or 3 for sale, but you rarely find an accident-free example in largely first paint and low verifiable mileage. As far as we are concerned, an icon from Porsche history for the collector who also wants to drive.
About the seller
The seller is a true petrolhead and has a small collection that needs to be thinned out a bit due to lack of space. He has many fond memories of the CGT from various drives through the Ardennes and the Eiffel. A fantastic car to drive and, thanks to its generous power and optimal weight distribution, a party on twisty roads.
Equipment
This 924 Carrera GT is fitted ex-factory with:
16-inch Fuchs (7 and 8 inches wide) with 205-55 and 225-50 tyres, respectively
Removable roof panel
Air conditioning (removed, A/C pump is included with sale)
Blaupunkt Heidelberg RCM 40 with anti-theft card
Modifications
- Oil temperature gauge
- Porsche brake calipers with 4 pistons (original present)
- Heigo roll cage (mounted on seatbelt attachment points, so no holes drilled)
- Mittelmotor electronic ignition (original present)
Notes
The car shows signs of use, but is rust free and mostly in first paint. As with almost all CGTs, the fitted polyurethane parts show some function due to age. The engine has recently been fitted with new (forged) pistons and has carefully made its first few hundred kilometres and will need further running-in and tuning. The front left shock absorber sweats a bit, but has no consequences for the MOT. A new set of Sachs front dampers is included. At 13,657km, the counter was replaced by Porsche Stuttgart in 1982. Just before the last engine overhaul, the counter failed again at 69,935km in 2013. This was repaired at Porsche Gelderland on 16 March this year.
Actual mileage is around 83,700km. There is a recent Valuation Report available for 90,000 Euros.
