The original Porsche 911 was shown to the public in autumn 1963 and was developed as a much more powerful, larger and comfortable replacement for the Porsche 356. Production began in September 1964 and lasted until 1989 before the model was substantially updated. Its successor came as the Porsche 964, but was still sold as the Porsche 911, just like the current models. Mechanically, the 911 stood out for its rear-wheel drive and air cooling. The original 911 series is often cited as the most successful competition car ever which contributed to its sporty image. It was initially referred to as the "Porsche 901", but due to protests from Peugeot, it was changed to 911
Early versions of the 911 had an air-cooled, rear-mounted 2.0-litre, 130-hp boxer engine, similar to the 356's four-cylinder 1.6-litre. It was mated to a five-speed "Type 901" manual transmission. In 1967, Porsche came the more powerful 911S with 160 hp and alloy wheels from Fuchs were offered. Of particular note was the Targa version, with a stainless steel roll bar, which also came on the market in 1967 and, from 1968, with a glass rear window.
The Targa bracket was fitted for safety reasons because Porsche was afraid that a full convertible would not pass strict USA inspections. The name "Targa" came from the Targa Florio road race in Sicily, in which Porsche had won many victories since 1956.
The 110hp 911T, for "Touring", was also launched in October 1967, for the 1968 model year. The T effectively replaced the 912, while the standard 130hp model was made slightly more luxurious and renamed the 911L (for "Luxus"). In 1969, the slightly lengthened B-series was introduced. The rear wheels were moved back 5.7 cm, increasing the wheelbase to reduce nervous handling.
For model year 1970, the engines of all 911s were increased to 2,195cc. Power outputs were upgraded to 125 hp in the 911T, 155 hp in the 911E and 180 hp (130 kW; 180 PS) in the 911S. Remarkably, despite the lower power output, the 911E was faster accelerating to 160 km/h.
The 911E Targa offered here by us is one such from the "F-series", with the "fast" 2.2 litre. It left the factory on 1-11-1970 to be delivered to the USA (Country code C02). However, this 911 never made the crossing and probably drove around for the first few months on an export license plate after being delivered by Mahag in Munich.
The car was registered in the Netherlands on 3-12-1971 and also has this date as its 1st admission date. Supplied in Burgundrot with black artificial leather, antenna and trims around the wheel rims. According to the registration history, the 911 E found a new owner some 25 years later. After that, the car changed hands a few more times and in 2013 the owner decided on a total restoration at none other than the specialists at Siemerink in IJmuiden, known for top restorations of the 356 and early 911s. Everything neatly recorded in a restoration report of more than 100 photos which of course comes with the car.
The car was restored to its former glory (and the cool colour Burgund red), with the 911 also being fitted with (period correct) sports seats. According to the assessor's report, the car has the matching engine and in 2015 rewarded the car with the rating: "concours staat" and an appraisal value of 125,000.00 euros. Furthermore, some minor modifications were carried out such as hydraulic chain tensioners and stainless steel exhaust.
Now, 9 years later, the car still looks fantastic and only the slight signs of use in the wheel arches and bottom betray that the car was actually used in the years after restoration. Completely free of rust and with an engine that runs like a charm ready for many more years of driving pleasure. Has been driven some 8,000 km after restoration
Our opinion
One of the most fun Porsches made. Spicy engine, Targa roof and the long wheelbase, all for ultimate driving pleasure. The car is in very good condition which means the buyer is not stepping into a half-finished project as many are offered. Our opinion is that the money to be put into a "project car" far exceeds the expected price of this Targa. Therefore, a unique opportunity to purchase a beautiful original and expertly restored Targa.
About the seller
The car has been traded in on a new 992 Turbo S. A very different end of the spectrum. The owner had the car from 2017 and drove it for some nice rides. Total of around 6,000km.
