In 1964, the Porsche 911 first became available as the successor to the 356, faster, roomier, and fitted with a genuine 6-cylinder boxer. Even the 356 was already a smooth and sporty coupe, but the 911 was still clearly a step ahead. That the 911, despite its unusual concept (engine at the back) would become such a success, Ferry Porsche never dared to dream. Not only the sporty motorist knew how to appreciate the 911, the car also became an icon in rally and racing. In the early years, the 911s were already being prepared for famous rallies like the Monte Carlo rally and in 1966 the 911 won the 24 Hours of Daytona. Even today, the classic Porsches are used for heavier rally and racing work. Roadholding, speed and reliability are the main assets. Just look at the Peter car cup, where 2-litre cars with well over 200hp compete for the championship. Until 1969, the 911 only came with 2-litre capacity, later came the 2.2 and 2.4, culminating in the F-series with the 2.7 RS.
The 911 Rally offered here began its life, like so many 911s, in 1996 in the USA. That so many cars come back to Europe has to do with the much better climate across the pond. Rust-free cars are rare in Europe and more the rule than the exception in the USA. The current owner bought the 911 from a Porsche enthusiast who himself bought many cars from the USA. He then took it to Siemerink, certainly in those days the best you could have for Porsche restorations. Siemerink immediately built the car for rally use including the roll cage. To get the engine all right, Porsche Gelderland tinkered with it until it had more than 170 reliable horsepower on board. The owner drove it no less than 75,000 km before he stopped rallying. Of course, after each rally, the car was always whipped into shape so that it would finish the next one without any problems.
Our opinion
The 911Rally we offer here, especially in its beautiful Schieffergrau colour, is a beautiful sight. Perfectly prepared for historic rally use such as the Wintertrial, Tulip Rally or SLS rally. Restoring a classic 911 and getting it ready for rallying will cost a lot of money, not to mention the time it will take. So if you are looking for a rally-ready car with FIVA card, this is your chance.
About the seller
Our seller has had the 911 since 2008 and had the car fully restored and rally-ready. In 2009, the time had come and he started rallying. For about 12 years, it washed off about 6000km a year. Meanwhile, age is starting to play a role and the owner moves around in a somewhat more comfortable 911. The rally car may therefore go to a new enthusiast and rally driver.
