The ‘Primal Turbo’ immediately made tongues wag in the mid-70s. Soon the 911 Turbo (internally 930) was dubbed ‘The Widowmaker’ for its crafty handling. A combination of a brutally impacting turbo boost, rear-wheel drive and the engine in the rear. A car you had to learn to drive to move it at the limit, but besides that, a mighty machine for the German Autobahn. At the time, there was almost nothing faster and certainly not with such high reliability and daily usability. In 1974, Porsche released the first prototype 911 Turbo. 260 hp from a 3-litre engine fitted with a Turbo compressor. 0-100 took just 5.2 sec and the top speed was over 250kmh. Only BMW released the 2002 Turbo at about the same time. This was truly unique in the passenger car world. Never before had turbocharged engines for public roads been developed for normal production cars. It is now commonplace, indeed Porsche is 1 of the few manufacturers still supplying an unblown engine in its GT models. Only 2,880 units were built of the 3.0-litre Turbo models before it was succeeded in late 1977 by the 3.3 Turbo, which was a bit friendlier to drive. The 1977 model year was characterised by the 16-inch wheels and the turbo pressure gauge in the dashboard. In addition, the rear wing had a different grille for better air supply to the engine. Although production of the 930 Turbo ended in 1989, its legacy lives on in later generations of the Porsche 911 Turbo. The 930 Turbo is still considered one of the most iconic sports cars of all time. Only 1422 of the last 930 Turbo 3.0 were built in 1977. Except for the 1989 930 Turbos, all 930s came with a four-speed manual transmission because the five-speed transmission could not handle the power....
The 930 Turbo offered here was first registered in 1977 in Germany by the dealer Raffay. About 10 years ago, the current owner bought the car in running condition and decided to fully restore it. The basis was already good witness the original inner wings with the original wax. Both optically and technically, the car was completely tackled. All fasteners were re-passivated, the suspension was powder coated, new shock absorbers, complete engine overhaul, new original leather interior upholstery and, of course, a total restoration of the bodywork that was painted really nicely in the original colour. The Fuchs rims were also sent to the factory for a full restoration. Porsche Gelderland finally took care of the import and registration in 2020. Chassis number 17 is one of the very first cars built in 1977 (nos 1 tm 10 aren race cars). 930770 in the chassis number indicates that it is an EU delivered 930 Turbo! Wouter Karssen of Autoblog made a nice video of it.
Our opinion
The 930 Turbo 3.0 is now a sought-after classic. Prices keep rising and that is not surprising because of the low production numbers and the relatively many ‘written-off’ cars that, thanks to incompetent drivers, ended up backwards on a tree.....The 930 offered here is in very good condition and the restoration will have cost more than the car will fetch. You can't fix it for it shall we say. As a bonus, it comes with the original matching crankcase.
About the seller
Our seller has owned the 930 Turbo for about 10 years and, after buying it, started the restoration that took about 5 years. He finds the restoration process more fun than driving and besides, there are more hobby cars that need attention. He has therefore decided to sell the 930 through The Collectables.
Equipment
- 409 Recaro sports seats
- 422 Blaupunkt Bamberg
Modifications
None, this 930 Turbo is completely original
Notes
This 930 Turbo is in fantastic restored condition. The engine fitted is not the original crankcase as evidenced by the ‘AT’ (from AusTausch) stamp. However, the seller has the original block with the car! The boot mat is not present with the car. After restoration, the 930 has hardly been driven, but as already indicated, the car drives as it should. There are many photos of the restoration showing that it was thoroughly tackled. Restoration photos on request.
Recent maintenance history
As described, the 930 has been carefully restored in-house. The car drives/brakes and steers as it should, but we do recommend a service upon commissioning.
