Since its public debut in 1979, the Mercedes G-Class has had a long history of faithful service and enduring appeal among car enthusiasts around the world. Designed as a utility vehicle for off-road use, the G-Class has seen several luxury and high-performance variants, while still remaining true to its robust origins. Surely the G-Class offered here is one of the most fun and striking variants ever built. A proper convertible! In 1987, this G-Class Cabriolet rolled off the assembly line. Equipped with the right 280 GE gasoline six-cylinder, which is good for 156 horsepower. The engine was slightly tuned back for the G-Class for better drive-ability and more torque down low. Combined with a limited slip differential on the front and rear axles makes it an absolutely off-road worthy convertible. That the G-Class stands its ground is proven by the fact that Jacky Ickx won the infamous Paris-Dakar rally in 1983 with a 280GE.
Where many G-Classes have been through a lot, fortunately this rare G has been well taken care of. Also known is the history where this Mercedes has hung out over the years. New, this convertible was delivered to a German doctor from Lower Saxony. In 1996 the G-Class was brought to the Netherlands, and registered by the former owner of G-Center Aalsmeer
In 1999, the Mercedes left to Las Palmas. Once again, a doctor opted for the rugged G-Class. How lovely that must have been. Cruising through the beautiful landscapes of Spain with a G-Class convertible. After the sunny outing, the convertible returned to the Netherlands in 2020. After the inspection at the Dutch Vehicle Registration Office (RDW), the car also received its former Dutch license plate again.
This G is equipped with the correct Recaro interior including armrests. In recent years by a well-known yountimer specialist to maintain the car in perfect condition. So this time no rotted chassis beams, worn suspension or steaming engine. Recently the fuel tank was replaced with an original plastic one, the shock absorbers are new, the radiator has been restored, the counters reconditioned and with new glass, a new fabric roof, various rubbers, brakes, all overhauled or renewed. In other words, the "G" is in very good condition, both from below and under the hood and on the outside. Not to compare with average versions that are offered.
Our opinion
Whereas these days an excess of luxury is on board with the current G-Class and the exterior display prevails, this distinguished narrow version is a welcome change. To In our opinion a rightful Collectable. This car represents a nice piece of automotive history and is considered a legend in the past of the rise of all-terrain vehicles and SUVs! In this condition hardly to be found and with the right options, a clear history and serious owners who have taken good care of it.
