The BMW Z8 was destined to become a classic. Sensational lines by Henrik Fisker with mechanics based on the E39 M5 make the Z8 a desirable and unique roadster.
This black example is even more special, because this BMW Z8 is literally in new condition. This car has covered only 1.662 km. This Collectable was originally delivered in The Netherlands, is coming from the first owner and has always been serviced by the same BMW dealer.
The BMW Z8 had a spectacular debut: the world was first introduced to this car in the James Bond film The World is not Enough. The moviegoers got to see the car before it's official unveiling. Interesting detail: the Dutch registration of this Z8 contains the initials of James Bond.
The Z8 is the spiritual successor of the iconic 507, which is now sold for astronomical prices. Henrik Fisker - who would later also design the Aston Martin DB9 - masterfully translated the classic lines of the 507 into the present. That 'present' is now more than 20 years behind us, but it doesn't show. Henrik Fisker has succeeded in creating a timeless design.
Just as is the case with the 507, eight cylinders are hiding under the beautiful, long hood. To be more specific: it is the magnificent V8 from the E39 M5, the first V8 from BMW M GmbH. The 400 hp and 500 Nm of torque ensure that the Z8 doesn'tt fall short in terms of speed. Of course, a classic roadster ought to have a manual gearbox, so that's why all Z8's (except the Alpinas) are equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. Add to that the sporty chassis and the Z8 is not only a joy to behold, but a joy to drive as well. If you prefer to drive with a hardtop (in wintertime, for example): this is also supplied from factory. This makes it possible to transform the Z8 into a beautiful coupé.
James Bond's Z8 was sawn in half with the help of a helicopter, but this example was handled with a lot more care. In fact, this Z8 is brand new. It has covered only 1.662 km and the owner has always kept the car in mint condition. In fact, he is so careful that the car is packed with cushions in the garage. Off course, all original accessories are present as well, such as the custom-made car cover and the hardtop with standard.
This Z8 rolled off the production line at the end of 2001 and was delivered to the Dutch owner on 02-02-2002. The same owner still owns the car today. In short: this is a virtiually new BMW Z8 from the first owner. We can safely call that unique.
Our opinion
The retro look may be a distraction, because the Z8 isn't just a pretty girl. This was BMW's 'halo' model, with evrything they had thrown at it. Compared to the E39 M5, the final drive has been shortened and thanks to the extensive use of aluminum, the car is also a lot lighter. Not only sensational to look at, but also sensational to drive!
During the shooting of the video we probably drove more kilometers in 1 day than the owner ever did, which is of course quite special. But not just us, 'colleague' Harry Metcalfe also rediscovered the Z8. See his video here.
