An atmospheric, high-revving, roaring V8 that sends 420 hp to the rear wheels, where else can you find that. A car that is usable on a daily basis, but also effortlessly capable on the race track and then also with the rare manual transmission. Originally delivered in Sweden and then brought to the Netherlands by the current owner. Despite the low mileage, the last owner had the connecting rod bearings replaced as a precaution. The set that came out was brand new, but if you open it up, you put in a new set right away. At least it shows that the engine was in top condition!
The early history of the M3 consists mainly of upsizing: from a four-cylinder, to a six-cylinder, to eventually an eight-cylinder. From 2.3 liters to eventually 4.4 liters for the fattest V8 in the M3 GTS. After that, however, BMW turned to downsizing, making the E9x-generation M3 a unique position in the history of this iconic model with both the first and last 8-cylinder in the front. All the more so because it is the last M3 with an atmospheric engine.
The 'S65' V8 is a scaled-down version of the V10 from the e60 M5 and was developed specifically for the M3. This engine was named International Engine of the Year several times. The V8 produces its maximum output of 420 hp at a whopping 8,300 rpm and is limited at 8,400 rpm. This makes it the most high-revving engine ever in a BMW production model. The M3 also makes excellent progress at lower revs: 85% of its maximum torque (400 Nm) is available over a rev range of 6,500 rpm. A nice fact: contrary to what you might expect, the V8 is lighter than the smaller six-in-line from the previous generation M3.
What also benefits the weight (and center of gravity): the M3 Coupe comes standard with a carbon roof. That this looks cool is, of course, a nice bonus. In terms of looks, you have nothing to complain about anyway: the M3 Coupe looks exactly how you want an M model with a V8 to look. The wide wheel arches, the powerdome on the hood, a more aggressive front bumper, the four exhausts: the picture is exactly right. At the same time, it is not over the top, making this M3 a timeless appearance. This example is finished in Jerezschwarz Metallic with a black leather interior, making this M3 not too loud. In terms of looks then, in terms of sound, this M3 can certainly set a throat with the special exhaust and subtle changes to the suspension to make the car just a little sharper than it already is.
The current owner has also taken good care of it: the car was always in the garage and, as already mentioned, has already had the new connecting rod bearings as a precaution. This example, like the Bentley and the GT3, comes from the Dark Rush collection.
Our Opinion
A brutal, high-revving V8, manual transmission, rear-wheel drive and a limited slip differential. It doesn't get any prettier (anymore). The engine is a feast and the combination completes it.
Jerezschwarz is a color very similar to Carbonschwarz. A very dark blue metallic paint which only changes from black to blue in bright light. In our opinion the composition is exactly as an E92 M3 should be.
About the seller
The Dark Rush Collection is (partly) in! This BMW, along with two other cars, is part of a private collection, and is being auctioned through The Collectables.
A particularly diverse collection of cars with varying personalities and driving characteristics. The trio is distinctive black on black trim with carbon accents. The strikingly different versions, combined with the unobtrusive dark colors is what makes these cars a carefully selected set. The low mileage, good maintenance history and proper care over the years makes these specimens a unique collection.
