The 964 Carrera 4 Targa combines the best of many worlds.
- Air-cooled
- Modern chassis
- Classic appearance
- Coupé and convertible in one
- Usable in all weather conditions
When it was introduced in 1989, the iconic lines of the primal 911 remained largely intact, but in the meantime 85% of the car was new. Equipped with power steering, ABS and a modern chassis, among other things, it is a classic which, by classic standards, is easy and good to drive. The bumpers were given more modern styling and, for the sake of handling at high speed, the car was given a fold-out spoiler, something Porsche still uses today.
In the 964, a new 3.6-litre engine was developed from the existing 3.2 Mezger block, which still makes the true air-cooled boxer engine sound. This one is good for 250 hp.
The nice thing about the Targa is that it combines the charm and fresh air of a convertible with the rigidity of a coupé.
In the 964, tiptronic (rear-wheel drive only) and all-wheel drive were available for the first time. Later, rear-wheel drive manual transmissions also came. This car is the most usable and sporty version with manual gearbox and all-wheel drive.
The version is classic silver metallic with dark blue leather and the aluminium roll bar (a black roll bar is included). Besides the classic mirrors (flap ears), the original 16-inch rims are also fitted.
This 964 Targa was admitted to Sweden on 20 April 1990 and drove in Norway a few years later until the end of 2021 when the current Dutch owner brought the car to the Netherlands with 141,000km on the odometer. The last maintenance took place in 2020 at the Porsche Classic centre Son in Norway. In January 2022, the car was serviced by Porsche specialist Kraan.
The service booklet is fully stamped and there is an extensive history with it that was kept by the previous owner.
Our opinion
Apart from the RS and turbo versions, the Targa is one of the most special bodywork variants. Partly because of its ‘National Police’ image, it is king of the road. As a Carrera 4, it can be used anywhere and is always ready in all weather conditions.
Equipment

Notes
This 964 Targa is in used but clean condition. The car has signs of use and it did get painted in the past. The engine was completely dismantled and rebuilt by Porsche Classic centre Son (Norway) in 2014 for just under 22,000,- euros. Documentation of this is present.
The Porsche birth certificate was issued on 22-12-2021.
Recent service history
The service book is fully stamped and, as already indicated, the engine was overhauled at the Porsche dealer at 118,000km in 2014.
