The Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider is an iconic sports car produced between 1966 and 1970. It was an inspiring modern design, and one of the most recognisable and beloved Alfa Romeo models of the time. Designer was the famous Italian designer Pininfarina. The distinctive design with its round shapes, slim bodywork and striking rear lights made the car instantly recognisable and timeless.
The name "Duetto" refers to the two seats in the car, emphasising the intimate and sporty nature of the Spider. The model was initially introduced with a 1600 cc. engine, and later also came with a 1300 cc. engine. From 1967, the 1750 cc. engine was also available with 118 HP, which ensured impressive performance and an exhilarating driving experience.
What made the Duetto Spider really special was its role in the 1967 film "The Graduate", in which the car featured prominently with a young Dustin Hoffman behind the wheel. This made the Spider even more famous and popular, especially in the United States, where the 1750 version remained available until 1970.
Besides its aesthetic appeal and film fame, the Duetto Spider was also known for its excellent handling and ride. The car had perfect weight distribution and a low centre of gravity, which made for a dynamic and enjoyable driving experience. The car remains a favourite collector's item among car enthusiasts and is still admired for its timeless beauty and sporty character. A piece of automotive history that reminds us of the elegance and passion of Alfa Romeo.
The 1750 Duetto at auction chassis no. AR*1481560*
This car was delivered in the USA in 1970, with the SPICA-injected engine developed for that market. In 1993, the car was imported into the Netherlands. Little information is known about that period, with registration number DH-48-13. In 2016, the car moved to a Belgian collector, who commissioned a professional restoration of the car, both the bodywork and the complete engineering and chassis, steering and brakes.
Engine and drivetrain were completely overhauled, and the original engine was brought to European specifications, with correct twin Dellorto carburettors. For the bodywork, the owner chose an extrovert blue metallic colour to suit his taste. The original steering wheel was replaced with an aftermarket keep Nardi steering wheel. The Duetto then moved to the garage of his holiday home in southern Spain, where the car was used only sporadically.
This 1750 Duetto has thus barely been driven in after its complete restoration, guaranteeing optimal classic driving pleasure for the 2024 season. Equipped with Belgian documents, delivery with Dutch registration possible.
Our opinion
A Duetto in top condition. Restored once, of course, but in this case it was all done very thoroughly, while retaining the patina in the interior! The fact that this is a 1750 version makes it even more special. It gives the car the speed it deserves and can also easily handle. Alfa built this model with the same ingredients and chassis until 1993 for a reason. That shows how progressive this Spider was in the 60s.
Equipment
This Duetto is equipped with:
Twin Dellorto carburettors
Nardi sports steering wheel
Modifications
To get the car EU-spec, the (very sensitive) injection system has been replaced by 2 twin Dellorto carburettors (and so it should be)
Notes
This Duetto is in fantastic condition. The car has hardly any signs of use, as can be seen in the photos. The car has been stationary for a long time but is good to drive, but we recommend some maintenance and tuning work before commissioning.
