The J40 is THE off-roader from Toyota that has a hefty scarcity of enthusiasts worldwide, and no wonder, because it is a character car first class. They are tough rascals, often having had a hard life, but they can stand up to that, if properly maintained. That is certainly the case with this BJ40 - with a four-cylinder 3.0-litre diesel engine.
From new, it has been owned for 44 years by its first owner, an off-roader at heart, who worked as an instructor for many years. The yellow Toyota even has some star status as it had the (photographic) lead role in a very extensive article on off-roading in Autovisie's 1983 Yearbook, produced by owner Jan together with Marcus Kingma.
It is very much on Jan's mind to part with his Land Cruiser, he hardly drives it anymore and thinks it is time for someone else to enjoy it. That's possible, because this BJ40 has covered just 190,000 kilometres, which is less than half what a well-cared-for example can have.
Much higher mileage is the rule rather than the exception. The car drives as if it has nowhere near passed the 100,000 kilometres mark. The four-speed gearbox shifts excellently, the 85 hp diesel plucks away at it lustily and demonstrates healthy pulling power.
The injection system was recently taken care of by the Buchli company in Harderwijk and all oils were changed. The upholstery was replaced in 2020 with the original vinyl(!) on the driver's seat and the front two-seater bench. The split 16-inch steel wheels are also original. The only thing needed (not urgently) is a new headliner, but that can just be bought new, as the parts supply for the BJ40 and FJ40 (the petrol engine version) is excellent. Jan maintained the Land Cruiser himself for the first 15 years and later left it to a specialist. Those who like to tinker themselves should know that an original workshop manual and instruction booklet are available. It even comes with an Air Camping roof tent.
Our opinion
Well, this is something else than just another sports car with dizzying horsepower. But a true classic and unique because of its history. Original Dutch delivery and from the first owner is truly unique. A practical collectable that will last for many more years and is made to be used instead of left to languish.

About the seller
The Landcruiser is being sold on behalf of the first owner who has spent most of his life with this LandCruiser he bought new. Jan is now elderly and has worked in the automotive industry for over 45 years. He bought the car at the time because of its reputation and apparently none of that was a lie. He still only drives it sporadically, which he thinks is a shame. Therefore, it is time for a new enthusiast to cherish this icon for the next 44 years.
