Having the Turbo look and being exclusive at the same time with 250 cars made, the slice of happiness called Porsche 964 America Roadster.
Porsche did not just come out with an entirely new 911 generation in 1989. With the 964, the sports car brand from Zuffenhausen also ensured that drivers would from now on be safe on the Autobahn with ABS and airbags, among other features. Porsche also made it possible to continue driving in winter as well, as with the Carrera 4, the brand delivered four-wheel drive on a 'regular' Porsche 911 for the first time.
As is to be expected of Porsche, the brand again came up with plenty of variations on the 911 concept. Of course, a Turbo, RS and convertible. But the much loved wide hips also became available on other Elevens, such as the desirable WTL. What the WTL (Werks Turbo Look) is to Europe, the America Roadster was to the US. But without a back seat to emphasise sportiness and its connection to the 356. Indeed, the name is a reference to the legendary 356 America Roadster, introduced 40 years earlier, of which only 16 were built.
The 255-millimetre-wide rear tyres fill the bodywork nicely. For this special occasion, Porsche left the warehouse doors wide open. The brakes, suspension and 17-inch Cup rims designed for the Porsche 964 Turbo are also fitted to the America Roadster.
With 250 hp from the 3.6-litre boxer engine, you were not short of anything in 1992, nor in 2022. From standstill to our legal speed limit takes just 5.7 seconds. If you happen to be in Germany, 260 km/h is a possibility. At such high speeds, you'll be happy with the spoiler that rises electrically.
After a long boat trip, this silver 964 arrived in America. Florida to be precise, reflected neatly in the documentation. Along with eventually 249 other examples that also may bear the 964 America Roadster name, the Porsche enjoys sunshine and exclusivity.
Since 2010, this 964 America Roadster has been driving on Dutch soil. With its current owner, the Porsche only gets out in nice weather. In a span of 4 years and 9 months, only 1,400 sunny miles have been driven.
Our opinion
Wide hips on a Porsche 911 is like coal and a barbecue, it completes the package. The Porsche 964 America Roadster not only has the looks, but the brakes and suspension of the Turbo also make it a real driver's car. Quite a bit more exclusive than the equally desirable WTL, especially in Europe. And instead of two passengers yammering about legroom behind your back, you now have a place to bring your golf bags. Notable detail: the American third brake light that pokes out of the bonnet like a periscope.
An America Roadster in Europe is already quite unique, but this one also boasts the full documentation. From the first registration to the last service. A rare opportunity.
Equipment
This Porsche is fitted from factory with features including:
The previous Dutch owner changed the green (Sherwood Green) interior to black leather (original green side panels are present). A trickle charger has also been fitted.
Remarks
The car is in a very tidy condition. In July 2020, the car was valued by Gratama & de Luxwolda Classic Car Taxations. This report concluded that the America is in a fine and excellent condition (see photos). Of course, there are signs of use, belonging to the age of the car, including:
Light stone chips
Light cracking in rear lights due to sun/drying out
Driver seat cheek scuffed

About the seller
The seller was familiar with classic and modern Porsches before buying the Porsche 964 America Roadster. A unique collector's Porsche was still missing and much more exclusive (but still relatively affordable) than this one is hard to find. Just looking at this car may be a joy, but in the end the owner didn't get to drive it very often. Only 1,400 miles driven in almost 5 years is not much, which is part of the reason to say farewell.
