We all know the Mercedes E-Class type W124 as a reliable taxi and mile-eater. In the early 1990s, Mercedes thought that a version with a fat V8 would also be nice. The 300E was quite a smooth car, but over 320hp in a seemingly standard sedan is of course much more of an understatement. Since the widened bodywork (needed because of the fat V8) and other modifications, such as a new tunnel for gearbox and catalytic converters, did not fit into Mercedes' assembly line rhythm, the job was given to neighbouring Porsche. They could use that just fine at the time, as they were not in the best shape. Porsche had some space left in the building where the 959 was previously assembled and so it happened. Over 10,000 500Es were built, of which just over 900 were Limited versions.
Since there are always customers who always want a bit more and AMG had/has an ear for that, the decision was made there to make an extra litre. On paper, it resulted in over 60hp (in reality almost 100hp) and 100NM of extra power. Not only the swept volume was increased of the M119 V8, but also the camshafts were fitted with a "hotter" profile, the intake was redesigned and some software adjustments were made. Still today, but certainly in those days (30 years ago) very serious values. Naturally, everything needed was improved and modified to cope with the extra power. Only 148 units left AMG's workshop, of which 45 had the base Limited. In the 90s, AMG was still really something special!
The example we are offering is one such from the series of 45. In February 1994, this 500 E Limited left the factory and was offered by MB as a "Neuwagen" to AMG for conversion to E60, after which it was used by a manager from Mercedes headquarters. After the car arrived in Japan as a so-called Jahreswagen, it was sold in 2020 in the USA to its last, Dutch, owner. The car has been very neatly maintained and there is also a roller bench printout present which shows that AMG rather conservatively quoted the power outputs, as there is 418hp instead of the 381hp present.
The data card provided shows which options besides the "Limited" option were fitted such as Sapphire black paint, Electrically adjustable seats and steering column, Sliding tilt roof, Seat heating and special AMG wheels. Finding these correct AMG wheels for this car was like a needle in a haystack. Over the years, the car had once been fitted with a so-called wide set while the original size of all-round three-piece 8.5x17 with a correct ET of 30 was hard to find, if at all.
They have since been fitted with a set of new tyres. The E60 has been serviced mainly in Japan and this is documented by all invoices present from 30,000km in 1999 to 142000km in 2018.
It doesn't get much more unusual. A W124 500E is already special, but an E60 is almost impossible to find. Currently there are 2 offered in Europe on Mobile.de where 1 is the Limited version. If you are looking for the ultimate "Autobahn Brenner" in a Taxi shell, this is your chance. Fast, comfortable, unobtrusive and an icon of Mercedes history. No bargain, but probably an excellent investment for the future that you can also enjoy. We also had Wouter K. from Autoblog form his opinion on this E60. He has done the necessary miles in a 500E and indicates that this car really is of a completely different order. Power, torque are explicitly present and the car also revs more smoothly.
About the seller
The seller traded the car in from the (only) Dutch owner, who took care of the car's full documentation and also managed to get the right 17-inch rims (OZ Racing, Aero 3). In addition, he replaced the Japanese "Jakuzo" trims with original parts. Similarly, the inner door panels are original again and the headlights were also replaced with the original set with the chrome reflector edge at the bottom.
