The Mercedes G-Class, known among connoisseurs as the Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen. These vehicles are also considered perhaps the most iconic four-wheel-drive SUV
available on the market. The G-Class is known for its rugged construction, excellent off-road capabilities and timeless design. This particular example comes from 1981, with an automatic transmission and a 156HP 6-cylinder engine.
The Mercedes G-Class 280GE is powered by a six-cylinder gasoline engine. With 156hp, this engine is powerful enough for the G-Class to perform well on and off the road. The car has had the necessary on-and-off-road experience since 1981 so it is fair to say that the mileage has gone around the clock. The engine of this offroader from Mercedes can handle these miles just fine, the gearbox on the other hand was recently overhauled which means that the vehicle is ready to once again push the odometer to a maximum!
The Mercedes G-Class is known for being one of the best off-road vehicles in the world. With a sturdy ladder chassis, two fully (currently three) lockable differentials and the all-wheel drive system, the G-Class is capable of taking on the most challenging terrains. This made the vehicle popular with adventurers and military agencies alike. In 1979, the civilian version went on sale to the public. Engines were updated and the interior kept getting a refresh over the years. The car got fatter and fatter and is eagerly sought after by known and lesser known buyers who appreciate its striking appearance.
Since its public debut in 1979, the Mercedes G-Class has had a long history of faithful service and enduring appeal to car enthusiasts around the world. The model presented here is another 1 from the early 460 series. Originally designed as a utilitarian vehicle for off-road use, the G-Class has seen several luxurious and high-performance variants over the years, while still remaining true to its rugged origins.
Our opinion
Austerity adorns man shall we say. Where today an excess of luxury is on board in the current G-Class and the outward show prevails, this distinguished narrow version is a welcome change. In our opinion, a deserved Collectable that can be enjoyed occasionally with the whole family. This car represents a nice piece of automotive history and is considered a legend in the past of the rise of off-road vehicles and SUVs!
The roof of the G-Class appears to be still in its original paint.
Underneath, the Mercedes has been repainted. Despite its age and mileage, the car has a fresh look.
Nevertheless, to get the G-Class in absolute concours condition, cosmetic work is needed.
But just this way it is a car that you dare to use for which it was made.
