We once auctioned off a BMW Z8 with just over 1600km on the clock. Now we have another unadulterated BMW bolide on offer with just 1700km and again from the first private Dutch owner. The BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition could only be ordered for a few months from July 2016.
In 2009, the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car was shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show as a plug-in hybrid with a 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine topped by two electric motors with 139 hp. The chassis was mainly made of aluminium. The windscreen, roof, wing doors and side screens were made of polycarbonate glass and the car had a CW value of 0.26.
It was followed up in 2011 with the electric BMW i8 Concept plug-in hybrid with a 131 hp electric motor driving the front axle, while the rear axle is powered by a BMW TwinPower Turbo 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine with a maximum output of 231 hp. The BMW i8 Concept was unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Due to its unusual architecture, the weight in the BMW i8 is optimally distributed among the axles. The electric motor is positioned on the front axle and the petrol engine at the rear, resulting in a low centre of gravity and optimal 50:50 weight distribution.
The i8 got a role in the film Mission Impossible (Ghost Protocol) and later in the James Bond film, Skyfall
After the i8 Prototype was introduced in 2013, production of this futuristic sports car got underway in 2014.
In early 2018, Germany's leading car magazine "Auto Motor und Sport" (AMS) tested the BMW i8 as a "Dauertester". Only 1 (minor) defect occurred during the endurance test period without affecting progress or safety. AMS closed with the words: Bet that BMW's first hybrid sports car will be tomorrow's classic! There are also plenty of examples of cars that have covered 150,000 kilometres without any problems.
We think the i8 Protonic Red Edition offered here by us is certainly the suitable candidate for it. Only 1700 km were driven by the first private Dutch owner who bought the car, then 2 years old, from the BMW dealer with only 47 km on the odometer, i.e. new. The 2 previous owners (a BMW dealer) only used the car to make their showroom even more attractive.
The BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition is completely original and is, how could it be otherwise, in new condition. It is a full option example (without the laser lights) and has been cherished by its current owner. Only 400 examples of the i8 Protonic Red Edition left the factory, guaranteeing exclusivity. At the time of writing, there are only 2 for sale, but not with this virgin mileage.
Our opinion
A unique opportunity to get your hands on BMW's first hybrid true sports car. In our opinion, in the most sought-after version and with such low mileage nowhere to be found. Looking at the other low-mileage sporty cars from this brand, it is not that hard to predict which way the prices will go. Although the i8 was not a sales topper in its early years, enthusiasts have since discovered what a special car this is and really shouldn't be missing from a collection, especially with this virgin mileage. The 2016 and 2017 models still have the original looks (bonnet with deep inlet) and all teething problems have been solved. Plus, thanks in part to the low weight (and still temporary subsidies), insurance and road tax are a lot lower than many a supercar.
About the seller
The seller fell for the 2018 model, colour and limited edition that makes the car so unique. He drove it extremely little, as an i8 roadster was available for daily driving. After 6 years, he is awarding the car to a new BMW enthusiast/collector.
