The description 'racing car for the street' is used inappropriately, but in this case there is no lie. The Ultima is as spartan as it gets, weighs 850 kg, but is allowed on public roads. And as the only street-legal Ultima, this Collectable has a V10 of Audi / Lamborghini origin on board. It goes without saying that this is a real thrill to drive.
Ultima originated as the brainchild of the fairly brilliant Lee Noble, who is best known for the car brand of the same name. Before he founded Noble, however, had several impressive sports cars to his name, including the first models of Ultima. The Ultima originated - unsurprisingly - as a racing car, but street versions followed, including this Can-Am. The racing genes are still very clearly present.
This Ultima Can-Am is a kitcar, so this car has cost the owner blood, sweat and tears in addition to money. The end result is impressive: it is a car like no other is driving around. While most Can-Ams are equipped with a Chevrolet V8, this is the only one equipped with a 520 hp V10 from the Audi S8. The same engine that can also be found in the Lamborghini Gallardo. This choice did not make the project any easier, as a result of which the owner sought cooperation with various specialized companies.
The car has therefore received a special engine management system from Kronenburg and a custom exhaust system. All efforts have not been in vain: this Ultima Can-Am V10 produces a phenomenal sound and can accelerate from 0-100 km / h in 2.8 seconds. Provided you dare. Incidentally, the car is built more on acceleration than top speed, making the top speed a "modest" 280 km / h.
A project like this is never 100% finished, so as a perfectionist, the owner feels that the car needs some fine-tuning. There is plenty of room for that. The shock absorbers, ride height, engine mapping, brake balance, camber: everything about this car is adjustable. Technically, the car is in any case completely finished and drivable.
Due to the hardcore character of the car, the mileage is still relatively low: it has only driven about 4,000 kilometers. The builder is primarily a technician and car enthusiast in its purest form, but emphatically not a driver. To find those extra 2 seconds at Circuit Zandvoort, a test day will have to be planned under the guidance of Wouter;) The owner especially liked the building and has now moved abroad, to a place that does not lend itself to a low-on-road racing car. He therefore leaves the driving to the next owner.
This car is only equipped with the bare essentials, so we can be brief about the equipment: all (unnecessary) luxury is missing.
In addition to the original Ultima Can-Am kit and the 5.2 liter V10 from Audi, a large number of specialist and custom parts were used during construction, including:
Jenvey throttle bodies
Custom chromed exhaust manifold and muffler
AiM MXL Pista dashboard (programmable)
Intrax shock absorbers (three-way adjustable)
Odyssey race battery
SACHS double seat clutch
KMS MD35 engine management system (fully programmable)
CNC custom racing motorcycle mirrors
Custom fuel tank, gear lever, shift mechanism, pedals and brackets
The car is in very good condition. There are some minor cosmetic points of attention captured in the photos:
Paint damage at splitter, rear screen and hood closure
Rim damage left and right front
The owner built and maintained the car himself in collaboration with Technocars, among others. The last MOT was carried out at Van Driel Auto Service and is valid until 09-2021.
About the seller
Owning a special sports car is one thing, building such a car is of a completely different story. The owner of this Ultima did it. It took him about five years to build it. In doing so, he received help from a number of specialized companies.
A move abroad is the reason for selling his unique creation. For the same reason, several other Collectables have already left its fleet. Think of a Buick Electra 225 from 1959, a Buick S60 from 1930, various Porsches and Alfas and more. Only the practical (and indestructible) Volvo 123 GT will stay in the Netherlands.
